Sony exec confirms the more powerful PlayStation we all pretty much knew was coming

We held out on reporting that Sony may have had a secret PlayStation console in the works because at the time it was nothing but a rumour; however, that changed this afternoon when a Sony executive confirmed the development of a “high-end PS4”.

As part of an interview with Financial Times, Sony Interactive Entertainment’s Andrew House let slip that the console was in production but also confirmed that we won’t be seeing it unveiled at E3 next week.

That said, according to Eurogamer, support for new software will be rolling out in the northern hemisphere’s Autumn (that’s our Spring), so we should know more soon.

As to whether this new console will replace the current PlayStation, House was quick to confirm that the new console – which the internet is colloquially referring to as the “PS4K” – will be sold alongside the current console, and that games should run just fine on both systems.

“All games will support the standard PS4 and we anticipate all or a very large majority of games will also support the high-end PS4,” House told the Financial Times. “We want to ensure we have a full range of the best experiences on the new system that we can showcase in their entirety.”

Obviously developers will need to prime games for the new console, but according to House the work will be “small but manageable”.

As for the price you can expect it to be more expensive because, well, the components needed to run games smoothly at UHD resolutions doesn’t come cheap; just ask PC gamers.

No definitive price or release date has been announced but we will let you know as soon as we do.

To the PlayStation 4 owners among our readers: will you be upgrading your console once the more powerful PlayStation is released? Pop your thoughts in the comments below.
