EA’s E3 Keynote: Everything you need to know

Electronic Arts (EA) kicked off this year’s E3 Expo with its new EA Play Conference that was broadcast from both the Novo Theatre in LA and the Hammersmith Apollo in London. Given that the news feed leading up to E3 was filled with more leaks than a shot-gunned bucket, it’s a marvel anything new was on offer. Here are some of the highs and lows of the keynote.

Titanfall 2 lands on the PS4 this October

Respawn CEO Vince Zampella opened EA Play with a bang, showing off the sequel to the developer’s 2014 Mech-and-Pilot FPS fragfest Titanfall. The new game looks eye-poppingly fast-paced, and eagle-eyed veterans will note that the multiplayer footage reveals a rather impressive list of new weapons and mechanics.

Pilot hang-time seems to be increased somewhat and players will also have access to handy grappling hooks and ziplines. The Mechs – or Titans – have increased in number and will be available with more customisation options. Zampella also revealed that not only would Titanfall 2 contain an offline single player campaign, but that it would be available on the PS4. Finally, he announced the release date – Titanfall 2 will hit stores on 28th October this year. Start saving, Pilots.

Mass Effect: Andromeda promises a lot

More freedom. More size. Bigger and better than ever. Players will be need to be courageous. Despite these promises, BioWare’s Mass Effect: Andromeda presentation felt rather underwhelming given both the expectations heaped on it and the fact that Respawn had knocked one out of the park earlier in the keynote.

Admittedly the above trailer contains some positively swoon-worthy footage and the premise of humankind heading to the stars to save the species is rather interesting. Still, it would’ve been great to see something that wasn’t pre-rendered footage – some gameplay perhaps – but it just wasn’t to be.

EA FIFA 17 has a new mode called The Journey

Another year, another FIFA. This year, however, EA’s premier football sim will contain a brand new mode called The Journey that, by all accounts, will allow players to live out their Premier League fantasies through a character called Alex Hunter. It looks kind of like the MyCareer Mode from NBA 2K16, which Spike Lee was pretty heavily involved with.

FIFA 17 will also include Premier League managers apparently, although how high this request was on fans’ wishlist is unknown. Still, it was an excuse to wheel Manchester United’s newly-installed manager Jose Mourino onstage for a scripted conversation that was rather cringe-worthy to sit through. Other than that, FIFA 17 will benefit from numerous tweaks and tucks from the developer and, admittedly, it looks pretty lifelike on the Frostbite Engine.

There are lot of Star Wars games in the pipeline

Former Ubisoft bigwig Jade Raymond was on hand to reveal some news about several games set ‘a long, long time ago in a galaxy far away’. Aside from fresh content promised for the Star Wars IPs already in the market, Raymond revealed DICE and Motive are developing a new Battlefront, Visceral Games is working on a brand new game with former Naughty Dog scribe Amy Henning and Respawn has its own Star Wars action-adventure in the pipeline.

Stuff blows up real good in Battlefield 1

Intuitive destruction. Unlimited gameplay possibilities. Dynamic Weather. The power of Frostbite. Immersive and dynamic. Impressive variety of weapons and vehicle – including Behemoths. No battle is ever the same.

Yes, DICE’s EA Play reveal of its forthcoming FPS Battlefield 1 sounded more like a series of buzzwords than a tangible game. Still one can’t argue with the footage shown off at the keynote, nor the live stream of the game’s multiplayer after the curtain came down. It all looks like pretty visceral stuff and from the sounds of things the game’s World War 1 setting has sat well with fans. Expect this to blow up in a big way later this year.
