WiFi now on wheels, with free net access on Cape Town buses

Starting today, bus commuters in Cape Town will be able to switch off their data and turn on free public WiFi while in transit.

The city’s MyCiTi bus service today began piloting on-board WiFi in some of its buses, offering passengers 50MB daily free data to use on their mobiles or laptops.

Users can also access free value-added content, such as news, weather and other multimedia.

VAST Networks is the network provider behind the WiFi.

“Our partnership with MyCiTi will deliver a fast and seamless WiFi infrastructure to commuters, both local and international,” Grant Marais, CEO of VAST Networks, said in a statement.

“If passengers reach their daily cap they can purchase additional data using a credit card. Users who have an existing internet account at home that includes access to public WiFi hotspots, such as AlwaysOn, G-Connect and MWEB, can simply log in for internet access,” MyCiTi said.

Cape Town mayor, Patricia de Lille was at there to officially launch the WiFi pilot.

WiFi-enabled buses will have a “WiFi available here” sign in them. You can connect by turning your WiFi on, connecting to “Vast”and choosing“Complimentary Access”.

A once-off account registration is required when using it for the first time.

“The high-speed WiFi offering will be gradually rolled out on MyCiTi buses in other parts of the city,” the company said.
