Disney-backed animation from SA studio to release on YouTube next week

Cape Town-based Triggerfish Animation Studios has announced a breakthrough from their Story Lab initiative, which sought to pump R42m into local animation and storytelling.

One of the products of this is A Dogshow with Cat, which has been licensed by The Walt Disney Company, with input from Disney as well as Peter Lord and Jonathan Roberts.

Lord is a seasoned animator who has worked on movies such as Chicken Run and Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit. Roberts, on the other hand, was a co-writer on a little movie called The Lion King.

The first we’ll see of the full show is a three-minute long teaser of the same name for Disney XD FC, a collection of shorts focused on soccer (or football, as the English members of our team will say). Shorts were commissioned from around the world and  A Dogshow with Cat is the only animation from Africa that made the cut.

On June 17th, 2016 you’ll be able to see A Dogshow with Cat in action on the Disney XD YouTube page. But, until then, we have a collection of stills for you to look at.

If you do want to see some South African animation (and music too) before June 17th, you’re in luck.

Mike Scott is the creator of A Dogshow with Cat and you’ve probably seen his work already. He is well known as the director and animator of local band Goldfish’s popular music videos. See it in action in the catchy We Come Together.

If all this local content isn’t enough (what are we, the SABC?), this isn’t everything to come out of Triggerfish and Story Lab. The studio will also be presenting four TV series at the Annecy International Animated Film Festival and Market.

Included with those four entries is Stick Man, which won “Best Animation” at Shanghai International Film and TV Festival as well as two British Animation Awards.

The other three animations are: Malenga Mulendema’s Mama K’s Super , Lucy Heavens’ Wormholes and Kelly Dillon and Marc Dey’s Ninja Princess.

Best of luck to these local products competing on the world stage.
