Reach out to friends posting suicidal thoughts online with this new Facebook tool

Facebook has announced the global release of a safety tool to help reach out to and support users who may show signs of being suicidal on the social network.

Last year, Facebook released the tool in the US, collaborating with social organisations such as Forefront and Lifeline with input from people who have personal experience with self-injury and suicide.

The tool has now been released globally in collaboration with country partners and in all languages Facebook supports.

How it works

Should someone be concerned over apparent suicidal posts, this is how Facebook lets them reach out.

If someone posts something on Facebook that makes you concerned about their well-being, you can reach out to them directly and you also can also flag it up for the company’s attention.

Teams working 24 hours a day will review, report on and prioritise the most serious flagged cases.

“And, as of today, the resources we send to the person who posted something concerning will include an expanded set of options. People can now choose to reach out to a friend, contact a helpline, or see tips,”  the company said.

You can access the suicide prevention page on the Facebook Help Centre.
