Which political parties are most popular among SA youth?

South African parties know that if you want a strong election campaign, young people are a crucial group to target. So which party strikes a cord with the country’s youth?

According to a survey conducted by market research firm, Ipsos South Africa, almost half of young people aged 18 – 24 said they would choose the ANC if national elections were to be held the day after taking the survey.

The survey saw 3 786 personal face-to-face interviews conducted with randomly selected South Africans in their homes and in the home languages of respondents. Of the respondents, 912 were in the 15 to 24 age group.

The actual number of surveyed people aged 18 – 24 was not supplied by Ipsos.

“When asked about intention to vote, almost a quarter (24%) said that they do not really want to vote or definitely do not want to vote, 71% said that they definitely wanted to vote or would vote, while 5% indicated that they did not know,” Ipsos said.

“The age group who most want to vote in the upcoming local government elections are those older than 50, 78% of them indicated they either definitely want to vote, or would to vote on 3rd August.”

It’s probably not surprising that the EFF and DA follow in second and third place respectively.

The “Red Berets”, as the EFF is known, is  made up of young leaders, who constantly highlight issues affecting young people.

The party has also released a series of songs as an electioneering tactic aimed at young people.

It’s also interesting to note that 8% said they would not vote at all. According to Ipsos, this is because some respondents said they felt that there was no political party that represented their views.

Younger people less interested in politics

Those surveyed that fell into 15 – 17 age group recorded the least interest in politics but were however more confident about the future of South Africa when compared to those in age groups 18 and above.
