The Freedom 251 is an Indian smartphone that costs R56

Indian smartphone startup, Ringing Bells is set to launch a smartphone this week that will retail for Rs 251 (that’s R56 in our money) amidst a flurry of controversy.

Chief among these controversies is the fact that Ringing Bells is set to lose Rs 150 (R33) on each of the 200 000 handsets it plans to ship this week.

It doesn’t end there though.

Back in March, The Times of India reported that the India smartphone market saw the phone as nothing but a gimmick. Many even believed that the phone would never materialise ahead of its delivery date of 30th June.

But, Ringing Bells has said that even in the face of a loss, the Freedom 251 will ship this week.

“We will have a loss, but I am happy that the dream of connecting rural and poor Indians as part of the Digital India and Make in India initiatives has been fulfilled with Freedom 251,” Ringing Bells founder and CEO, Mohit Goel told Indian Express.

Could you make this phone at this low price?

Looking at the innards of the Freedom 251 we can understand where all the skepticism is coming from. The handset boasts a 4inch display, 8MP rear shooter, and a 3.2MP selfie snapper.

The CPU runs at an admirable 1.3GHz and is paired with 1GB of RAM. Storage is a rather small 8GB but this can be increased with a microSD card.

Once you know all that the low price becomes even more unbelievable because, those specs are hardly bad.

Of course, until the phone ships later this week nothing is solid, and if its found that Ringing Bells has simple tipexed the name of another manufacturers phone out like it did in February, then the Freedom 251 might never see the light of day again.
