Petition: SABC offered R100k reward to expose staff “leaking info”

An anti-SABC petition has claimed that the public broadcaster offered a cash reward for employees to expose each other for “leaking information”.

The Broadcasting, Electronic, Media and Allied Workers Union (BEMAWU), launched a petition on Petitions24 titled “Free the SABC from censorship and political interference” this morning.

According to BEMAWU, its union is also made up of SABC journalists and non-SABC employees working in broadcast media.

Among the petition’s demands is the following:

“The promise of reward of R100 000 for anyone providing information in respect of staff ‘leaking information’ must be withdrawn with immediate effect as it has turned the workplace into a ‘spy vs spy’ situation which is not conducive for a healthy workplace. If management has nothing to hide, there is nothing to ‘leak’.

Some of its other demands are that the independence of journalists be guaranteed and respected and bullying and intimidation of employees must end.

Since its launch and at the time of writing this, 170 people had signed the petition.

Although a lot of the names are from people who don’t work at the SABC, some have chosen not to reveal their names on the petition and we also managed to pick up a few names of people who currently work at the public broadcaster (whom we won’t disclose).

Most signatures are from people based outside of major cities in the country, according to the petition’s stats.

“What is happening at the SABC is wrong and unconstitutional”, one comment reads.
