Acer partners with game dev to work on a VR headset

Acer has partnered with Swedish game developer Starbreeze (the dev behind The Darkness and Syndicate) to expedite work on a VR headset.

The two firms will work together to design, manufacture and market the StarVR headset as a new company. For the moment that company will bear the rather unimaginative moniker of Acer Starbreeze Corporation.

Shares in the new corporation will be divided evenly between Acer and Starbreeze. The two firms have also allotted $25 million in capital to kick start proceedings. According to Venture Beat, this funding will increase incrementally as and when the new corporation needs it.

Unfortunately for VR fans, this headset isn’t being designed to be used at home. Instead, StarVR is targeting entertainment locations like cinemas and arcades.

In a press statement, Starbreeze, chief executive officer Bo Andersson Klint said the partnership would help to improve the quality and market reach of the StarVR headset.

“With the Acer production partnership for the StarVR headset, our joint venture with IMAX for location-based entertainment, and the content platform collaboration with Smilegate, we now have a perfect ecosystem for our VR centers,” Klint said.

The firm has said that a small number of StarVR headsets would ship this year but production would begin in earnest next year.
