SPN sends out “pre-piracy” warnings ahead of Euro 2016

Sony Pictures Network (SPN) has warned torrent and streaming websites ahead of tonights kick-off of the UEFA Euro 2016 tournament.

The term “pre-piracy” slingshot’s our minds back to the idea of the “pre-crime division” in Minority Report but it really is the best way to describe the warning Sony has issued.

As you may, or may not be aware, some folks turn to streaming sites to watch their favourite sportsball (you’re fired – ed.) tournaments. The problem is that many of these sites haven’t obtained the license needed to stream the tournaments legally.

Even after the match has concluded, many of the matches can be found on torrent sites. Once you understand this you can understand why SPN wants to protect its broadcasts of the UEFA Euro 2016 games.

“Please be advised that our Client has exclusive Television Rights, Mobile Transmission Rights and Broadband Internet Transmission Rights for the upcoming 2016 UEFA Euro Cup,” reads the warning letter obtained by TorrentFreak.

The letter goes on to say that SPN will be, “compelled to initiate legal proceedings (civil and/or criminal)” should the sites who have been warned host any Euro 2016 matches.

Obviously this would motivate the sites which have been warned to comply right? Well, not really. In a response to TorrentFreak that is as cocky as Anakata’s responses to legal demands back in the hey-day of The Pirate Bay one torrent site owner told TorrentFreak, “I forgot that we need to upload UEFA. It’s good that they reminded us.”

The UEFA Euro 2016 kicks off at 21:00CAT this evening and we suggest watching it on the telly, or down at the pub.
