Journalists, you can learn how to fly drones for free in July

Code for Africa has called on journalists, social justice watchdogs, and media innovators to attend a free drone bootcamp in Cape Town next week.

Over the course of three days, Code for Africa along with drone pilots, will teach attendees everything they need to know about drones, including how to assemble their own, which they then will be allowed to keep.

The bootcamp will also teach attendees how to fly a UAV in a simulator before they get to grips with the tech in an outdoor environment.

The idea behind the bootcamp is to kickstart new ventures based around the technology of drones and also bring to light the #DroneJournalism movement currently spreading throughout Africa.

As we mentioned, the bootcamp is free to attend but, only to “applicants who can demonstrate how they’d be able to use their new skills to boost newsroom coverage or their organisation’s advocacy.”

Talking drones

A number of speakers have been lined-up to show attendees how the media can take advantage of drones. Speakers include Professor Paul Egglestone, former BBC, ITV and Sky producer who pioneered drone journalism in Europe.

Alan Ball, from local drone company Flying Robot, and Robyn Farah of the Modern Alchemists and Arduino Cape Town, will also be speaking at the bootcamp.

If that wasn’t enough to convince you, Code for Africa if offering R30 000 for the best drone journalism story or idea that comes out of the camp.

Finally, for those that can’t afford the trip down to Cape Town there will be three travel and accommodation bursaries available for applicants who can, “show compelling reasons why they should be at the event and why their organisation cannot afford the costs.”

The bootcamp takes place from 13th – 15th July in Cape Town and if you think its up your alley be sure to head to the Dronecamp website for more information.
