After Pick n Pay’s runaway success with Stikeez – free toys that came with every purchase of R150 – the supermarket chain has announced its successor.

The new Super Animals are a series of trading cards that can be collected and scanned into an augmented reality (AR) app.

Like the Stikeez campaign, the threshold for purchases is R150, which nets you four random cards out of the 108-card collection.

Each card can be scanned into the Super Animals app, allowing you to see a cartoon version of the animal.

While the app is free on Android and iPhone, there are some additional items punters can purchase.

For R50 you can buy the “Sound Card Reader” which scans a barcode on the card and plays that animal’s sounds. We’re not entirely sure about to the reason behind the device, as the animal’s call (as well as facts) is included in the app. This may just be a nice alternative for parents not willing to trust their young children with a phone or tablet.

For R20 you can buy a collector’s album which comes with activities to do and holds a collection of cards. Inside of the app there’s also a virtual version of an album to keep your collection with added features such as unique unlocks.

For every album sold, R1 will be donated to environmental organisations. They are: ANParks, the SPCA, Hoedspruit Endangered Species Centre, SANCCOB and the Endangered Wildlife Trust.

Naturally, the Big Five get extra attention. These five animals are “animated, interactive and ready join you in adorable selfies.”

Cape Town based company Sea Monster developed the app. They’re well versed in corporate games, as they’ve made software for the likes of Woolworths, Old Mutual, Spur and more.

This campaign runs from July 11th to September 4th 2016, or until the animal cards run out.

To help distraught parents burning their paychecks to get those last few cards, there will be “swap sessions” held at Pick n Pay Hypers stores around the country.
