Want to show solidarity with Zimbabwe’s #ThisFlag movement? Sign this petition

Zimbabwe is currently embroiled in the biggest public protests since its independence in 1979, as the #ThisFlag movement sweeps across the country.

Pastor Evan Mawarire, the initiator of the movement, was recently arrested for allegedly being in possession of police items and inciting violence in wake of the #ZimShutDown2016.

Other Zimbabwean citizens have also been arrested, with footage of them being severely beaten while in police custody surfacing online.

Citizens living in South Africa, along with locals, have been rallying around Mawarire and protestors over the past week on social media, since civil servants staged a stay away over the issue of non-payment of salaries, which has been ongoing for a couple of months now.

Added to that is an online petition that has been launched on Amandla.Mobi to better enable supporters to show solidarity with the movement and demand the Mawarire’s release and the end to police brutality.

The petition, titled “Solidarity with #ThisFlag, #FreePastorEvan, stop police brutality”, calls for Zimbabwe’s government to “bring an end to police brutality and intimidation and listen to its people”.

“As South Africans, we have a limited understanding of the complex issues facing Zimbabwe, but what we do know is that the struggle against injustice and inequality cannot prevail if citizen voices are silenced,” it reads.

“We can no longer remain silent about the conditions facing our brothers and sisters in Zimbabwe. Lets stand together and support the demands of the #ZimShutDown2016 and #ThisFlag movements”.

Since the petition was launched earlier this afternoon, over 10 000 people have signed it. You can add your signature to it by heading over to Amandla.Mobi’s website.
