Eskom’s research wind turbine is being turned to dust

Eskom’s Klipheuwel Wind Farm near Cape Town has served as a research facility wind energy technology, contributing 3MW of power to the grid.

Eskom announced today that the facility has run its course, and that it will now be decommissioned. To take its place, the newly operational Sere Wind Farm is already producing 100MW of electricity.

“The Klipheuwel Wind Farm provided an excellent platform for learning in this type of renewable technology. This learning has helped inform the business in its decision-making for other larger projects such as the Sere Wind Farm,” Eskom said.

But what is going to happen to the three turbines after they have been dismantled? Well, Eskom is going to use one of the turbines for practical training at the South African Renewable Technology Centre (SARETEC).

The facility is the only renewables training facility in South Africa. “There will be an opportunity for learning to continue and to broaden the skills base in South Africa and help enable development in the industry,” Eskom explained.

The other two turbines “will be disposed of following Eskom’s commercial processes.”
