Star Trek fans will get their sci-fi fix through Netflix thanks to CBS

Netflix and CBS have announced a licensing deal which will make the newest season of Star Trek available in 188 countries.

The last season of Star Trek – Enterprise – reached its conclusion in 2005 and fans have been waiting since then for a new season of the iconic show. The new show is slated for a January 2017 release.

“This international partnership will provide fans around the world, who have been craving a new series for more than a decade, the opportunity to see every episode virtually at the same time as viewers in the U.S,” president and chief executive officer at CBS Studios International, Armando Nuñez said.

The “almost” in that statement is key here. Fans won’t have to wait long though as the licensing agreement will see new episodes airing on Netflix within 24 hours of the U.S premiere.

Ardent Trekkies will also be able to watch all the older episodes from the Star Trek back-catalogue. This includes 727 episodes from The Original Series all the way up to Enterprise. Sadly these aren’t immediately available but will be “by the end of 2016”.

If you simply can’t wait a moment longer a little birdie told us that the entire Star Trek back-catalogue is available on Hulu.

As for what’s to come from the new series, Netflix vice president of Global Television at Netflix, Sean Carey was rather candid.

“The newest chapter of the story promises to continue the rich tradition of adventure and is sure to excite fans everywhere.”
