Gauteng Education responds to claim it stole Admissions site idea

The Gauteng Department of Education has said it’s still considering the allegations brought against it by a woman who claims the idea for the Admissions site was stolen from her.

Melissa Laing, an IT entrepreneur who owns a company called Huntlia Technologies, told EWN she pitched the idea to the department in 2012 but was turned down.

Laing said she was shocked to later see the system up and running as her idea had originally been brushed aside as ‘stupid’.

“The department can confirm receipt of notice of motion from the magistrate court last week on the matter between the Gauteng Department of Education and Huntlia Technology, [sic]” Oageng Pitoro, from the department’s media relations said in a statement.

“We have noted with concern the accusation leveled against the department by Huntlia Technology claiming the department is using their Online system concept without crediting them,” Pitoro added.

“The department is still considering the matter and will respond accordingly in due course.  The department is not at liberty to divulge any further information regarding the summons at this point as the matter is sub judice.”

The department will wait for a court ruling on the matter before taking further action.
