How to get Windows 10 for free now or risk paying up to R2 299 after 29th July

The deadline for users to install Windows 10 for free is in sight and if you decide too late that you want to upgrade the OS may cost you a hefty amount.

This will be the last operating system to come from Redmond giant Microsoft which presumably means that Windows 10 will see a number of rolling updates. One of these updates is the Anniversary Update, which will be delivered to Windows 10 PCs next week.

Perhaps the greatest motivator to click the “Update” option on the Windows 10 prompt on your PC is money. When the clock strikes 00:01 on Saturday 30th July the update will no longer be free.

Looking at the Microsoft Store here in South Africa, Windows 10 Home will retail for R1 399 and Windows 10 Pro will retail for R2 299. That isn’t the worst pricing we’ve ever seen given that Windows 7 Professional still costs R2 699.

Of course you could save all of that by just taking Microsoft up on its offer.

How to bite the bullet and install Windows 10

Before you make that final call you will need to check that your computer can handle the operating system. The recommended specifications from Microsoft are:

  • 1GHz processor
  • 1GB RAM (32-bit) or 2GB (64-bit) – You can check which “bit” your PC is simply press Windows Key + Pause/Break
  • 16GB free storage space for 32-bit and 20GB for 64-bit
  • DirectX 9 or later compatible graphics card
  • Minimum display resolution of 800×600

Before anything else make a back-up of any information you think you might need.

Then, head to the Software Download section of Microsoft’s website and click the “Upgrade now” button. An upgrade client, not the operating system will then download.

Once that is complete, double-click on the upgrade client download and click “OK” when the User Account Control requests whether you will allow the programme to make changes to your PC.

A download of about 3GB will begin and the setup will walk you through the process. We urge you read carefully through the setup steps to make sure you install the correct version and don’t delete any information you really need.

So will you be biting the bullet or are you sticking to your guns and not upgrading? Let us know in the comments below.
