GirlCode’s third annual female-only hackathon takes place this August

GirlCode, an NPO focused on female empowerment in technology returns this August with their annual female-only hackathon.

This hackathon gives participants 30 hours to create a solution to “everyday problems at work, home or travel for women”, which will then be evaluated by a team of judges.

The winning team (of three to six participants) will walk away with R10 000, while R20 000 spot prizes will be awarded throughout the event.

The 2016 theme is “Women Go Digital” which centres around preparing unemployed women for work.

“The initiative is still in the works but we believe that equipping women with computer skills is very important. Our country has a very high skills gap and we would like to do our part in bridging this gap. Like the hackathon the initiative will be open to all females” says  co-founder of GirlCode, Tinyiko Simbine.

As entry is free and the  organisers are looking for any participants in a broad skills range, there is very little reason not to attend.
