LG X Cam coming on 10th August at R300 per month

LG South Africa this afternoon announced the availability of its LG X Cam smartphone in South Africa.

In case you’re not up to speed on the handset’s specifics, this is one of the two midrange handsets the company unveiled at Mobile World Congress earlier this year.

As its name suggests, a great deal of the X Cam’s appeal lies in its camera – a dual sensor and lens affair consisting of a 13MP and 5MP 120-degree wide-angle shooter. For Selfie addicts there’s also a 8MP camera around the front.

In terms of other specifications, things are decidedly midrange, but more than capable. Here we’re talking about an Full HD 5.2-inch screen, a 1.14GHz Cortex-A53 Octa-Core processor, 2GB of RAM and 16GB of storage on an Android 6.0 Marshmallow software image. It also has a 2500 mAh non-removable Li-Ion battery and – even though SD Cards of this capacity aren’t available yet – supports up to 2TB of add-on storage.

In terms of pricing, it will be available for a recommended retail price of R5 500, but consumers can pick one up from R300 per month on one of Vodacom’s entry-level package from the 10th of August onwards. The packages also include 12 months screen insurance.

No information on deals from other networks was available at the launch.

To drive excitement about the phone, LG will also be running a social media competition on Instagram, where entrants guess what’s featured in a weekly wide-angle shot for a chance to win an X Cam (between one and two devices will be given away per week) between the 1st of August and the 6th of September.

Additionally, folks that buy an X Cam from Vodacom during this period will be entered into a draw for a grand prize of R101 000 they can use to visit any destination in the world.
