BlackBerry repurposes Alcatel Idol 4 for second Android phone

BlackBerry has officially revealed its second Android-powered smartphone – the DTEK50.

If the device looks a bit familiar, it’s because it is a BlackBerry-branded version of Alcatel’s Idol 4 smartphone. If you think about it, it is actually a very clever move from the Canadian company, as it didn’t need to go through the entire process of building a new phone from scratch.

Apart from sharing the same design as the Idol 4, it also shares the same specifications: a 5.2-inch all-touchscreen, 1080p display, Qualcomm Snapdragon 617 processor, 3GB RAM, 13-megapixel camera, and 2 610mAh battery. For your selfies, it has a 8-megapixel front camera.

Being BlackBerry, it also has a whole bunch of security features, enough for the company to call it the “world’s most secure smartphone.”

According to The Verge, the key to the security lies in the phones name.

“It has BlackBerry’s DTEK software that protects users from malware and other security problems often seen on Android smartphones. The DTEK app lets users quickly get an overview of their device’s security and take action on any potential issues,” it wrote.

Making the operating system itself a bit more secure, it uses a modified version of Android 6.0 Marshmallow.

Available from 8th August, it will retail for around $300, but there has been no word from South African representatives on how much it will be locally.
