The original singer of the Pokémon theme song, Jason Paige, returns to sing it again after almost 20 years

With Pokémon grabbing global headlines thanks to Pokémon Go, it feels like a good time to dig into the franchise’s history.

What better way to do that than to listen to the glorious theme song from the original show?

The theme song, which has no official name, was played for 79 episodes of the original English version of the show.

While the writer of the famous lyrics was a man named John Loeffler, the vocalist that brought it to life was Jason Paige.

About 20 years after this song had wormed its way into millions of childhoods, it’s back. On Paige’s YouTube channel he recently uploaded a short clip of him performing the song again. Check it out and try to stop yourself from getting a big stupid grin on your face.

We have to admit, Paige still has it. It’s 1997 all over again and we still believe that Mew is under that damn truck.

One of our favourite times that the theme song popped up in a strange location was the movie Paper Towns. In it a trio of cowardly characters need some inspiration to go into an abandoned building. So, they do the obvious thing and sing the inspirational Pokémon theme song. We watched it in a prescreening with a group of stuffy, serious movie critics and we were the only ones enamoured with the scene. Luckily, that’s also on YouTube, watch it here.
