Five million hours of content have been viewed on ShowMax

Streaming video services have had a bit of a hard time in South Africa, but one service that seems to be making great strides in the market is ShowMax.

How great? Well, the company revealed today that altogether, 10 million TV shows and movies have been watched on the platform since launch last year. In terms of minutes, that equates to over 5 million hours watched – or more than 500 years if played back-to-back.

“We knew we had a good product and an incredible engineering team when we launched ShowMax” said Chief Product Officer Barron Ernst, “but hitting this milestone in under a year is tangible proof that we’re on the right track.”

The service is currently available in 37 countries in Africa, and Ernst says that a service like ShowMax consistently needs to evolve as the market grows further.

“A service like ours isn’t static – it’s a constant process of making improvements and rolling out new features, monitoring the impact, and then making further tweaks,” said Ernst. “The positive reception we’ve had so far has come from listening to the needs of our customers and avoiding a one-size-fits-all mentality.”

“There’s still loads to do and we’ve got a bunch of developments in the pipeline, but I’m pleased with what we’ve achieved so far.”

The company recently added its service to DStv Explora, but also has a mobile app, and is compatible with certain Samsung and LG smart TVs, as well as Apple TV.

In January this year, ShowMax announced that it will collaborate with MWEB to give customers who sign up for select 12-month contracts, three free months of ShowMax and ADSL.
