Who’s leading recent conversations about #ThisFlag Zim protests on Twitter?

Zimbabwe is currently experiencing one of the largest public uprisings in recent memory and social media is undoubtedly the tool most used to spark conversations about it.

Citizens have recently taken to the streets to protest, among other things, the non-payment of civil servant salaries by the ZANU PF-led government.

The hashtag #ThisFlag, launched on Facebook a few months ago by a man named Evan Mawarire. It now has its own page and has spilled over onto platforms such as Twitter and Instagram.

As protest action has escalated and a national civil servants stay-away is being organised, more people have begun talking about the unrest using the hashtag on Twitter.

Here’s a snapshot of some of the biggest conversation influencers, tweeters and photographers using an analysis of 1 500 tweets posted from 11:30pm last night to 11:05am today with #ThisFlag:

@NditevereTwimbo has posted the most tweets over this time at 63. The Mail & Guardian has been the most popular account tweeting about it, thanks to its over 500 000 followers.

@graceymud has posted the most photos.

When breaking the tweets down into types, retweets are the most popular (77% of total 1 489 tweets) followed by links, images and text tweets (10.6%).

Altogether, these tweets have had a potential reach of over 2.2 million people.
