Giant 3D prints, metal men and more at the MakersCorner in Decorex

There was a call put out to South African makers a few months ago, to set up a bastion of making at Decorex 2016. Now that the event has kicked off, we’ve had a chance to check it out.

For those out of the loop, Decorex is a local expo running from today (August 5th) to August 9th 2016. The Johannesburg version of the expo will be the third time the MakersCorner has been featured. You can check out pictures from the Durban and Cape Town corners which took place earlier this year.

There are a tonne of 3D printers and great prints from local manufacturers Morgan 3D Printers and Cheetah 3D printers. You may know the name Cheetah (or its creator Hans Fouche) as the machine that created a 3D printed acoustic guitar, car jack, lawnmower and much more.

You can see some amazing prints made on the Cheetah below, including giant pillars and larger-than-life versions of Marmite, Black Cat Peanut butter and even beer bottles so big that they can be used as stools. We’ll have stories and closer looks at these prints soon.

But there’s not just 3D printing. There are also exhibits such as Connect-It, a modular system for building with steel that doesn’t require welding. You can see their mascots – two metal men – in the gallery above.

If you want to attend Decorex you’ll need tickets that run R110 per adult. You’ll also be hit for R20 for parking.

Finally, we have some tips for getting there. One of the roads close to the venue – Gallagher Convention Centre – is currently under construction and it’s going to be a nightmare to get by it, especially if the lights are out like they were when we went. Try to avoid Le Roux Avenue, especially the intersection with Old Pretoria Main Road.

Finally, the MakersCorner isn’t in any of the halls and can be difficult to find. Check out the map below if you need direction:
