Apple Watch 2 won’t have significant upgrades

The wearables market is definitely not going anywhere, but most people have been cautiously holding off from getting an Apple Watch – until the second version rolls around.

While the company is expected to make an official announcement later this year, it seems that Apple Watch’s successor isn’t too far off, and packs a substantial upgrade.

According to KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo in a note to investors, the Apple Watch 2 will look pretty much the same as the original watch, but will have a faster 16nm processor from TSMC, and other goodies like a barometer, a GPS radio and a somewhat thinner display.

It might have a thinner display, but don’t expect the actual device to be thinner. Powering all those extra things and the faster processor requires a bigger battery, and that prevents Apple from slimming down the size.

In his investor note, Kuo also mentions a second model for the Apple Watch 2.

According to the analyst it won’t see a substantial upgrade as the first-mentioned model, and will mainly consist of smaller upgrades like the GPS radio barometer and updated components. In terms of the size, it will pretty much stay the same.

According to Apple Insider, there won’t be a substantial Watch upgrade for the next two years.

“Looking ahead, Kuo doesn’t expect Apple to change its wearable form factor in 2017, a year that will most likely bring LTE support for standalone cellphone and data functionality. More radical design changes should arrive in 2018 alongside improved health applications and potentially FDA approval,” the publication wrote.

At this point we have to caution that it is all speculative, and even the name “Apple Watch 2” hasn’t been confirmed yet. Apple usually plays its card very close to its chest, so there is still a chance that things could change.

Will you be getting an Apple Watch 2 when it comes out?
