Pirates crack Rise of the Tomb Raider’s Denuvo protection

At least one instance of Denuvo, the impenetrable software that protects games such as Rise of the Tomb Raider, has been cracked according to reports.

Cracking Denuvo has become something of a fool’s errand in recent months. Chinese cracking team 3DM famously said last year that if current trends in encryption technology continue, pirated games would become a thing of legend in two years time.

With that having being said a cracker known as Voksi was able to get around the Denuvo protection and give pirates the ability to play pirated games through Steam.

“Somehow he found out about this exploit. At first, he couldn’t believe it himself. But after several tests it really worked. And then he got really excited and released it,” Royalgamer06 (Voksi’s colleague) told TorrentFreak.

This exploit allowed pirates to play Rise of the Tomb Raider, Total War: Warhammer, Just Cause 3 and many more games that contained the exploit.

The jubilation from pirates was short lived though because yesterday the exploit was patched.

The patch fixed an exploit which used the DOOM Demo Denuvo activation in games and pirates were once again prevented from playing free games.

The Rise of the Torrent Raider

Despite the exploit being patched, this text appeared on a Rise of the Tomb Raider torrent:

Kind Adventure

Protection SteamDenuvo

It appears that this release of Rise of the Tomb Raider on torrent sites by CONSPIR4CY has a cracked version of Denuvo and what’s more, according to posts on reddit, it works.

This victory from pirates is a rather hollow one though. For one thing, this is just one game with one iteration of Denuvo. Secondly, Rise of the Tomb Raider has been out since January meaning that the game has had nearly seven months of sales unencumbered by piracy.

Too little, too late

While pirates might celebrate this as a victory against the oppression of Denuvo we can’t help feeling like pirates are fighting a war they might just lose.

Last month Kickass torrents was removed from the internet, last week torrent search engine Torrentz shut its doors and according to reports ExtraTorrent has a target on its back as well.

So while one instance of Denuvo may have been cracked for one game we can’t help feel that piracy has become more of a pain than its worth.
