City of Ekurhuleni to kick off free coding course for local youth

Starting tomorrow, young people in Ekurhuleni have the chance to sign up for a free, eight-week coding course, courtesy of the local authority.

The City of Ekurhuleni’s Learnerthon programme will aim to teach participants computer basics, digital literacy, creative coding, app development and  the principles of gamification.

“This will empower young people with free Information Communication Technology (ICT) coding skills to inspire them to pursue careers in the ICT space and spark their creative side,” the City said.

The Germiston and Katlehong libraries will be opened for registration to all young people between the ages of seven and 21 to sign up.

During these eight weeks, students will be expected to work in groups to decide on a project towards the end of the course and develop it from start to finish with the support of their assigned coding mentors.

An 80% pass rate on the digital literacy course is a prerequisite for learners to progress to the next course.

“Post the Learnerthon programme learners have an option to pursue a six weeks course on computer analytics also offered for free at Ekurhuleni libraries,” the City says.

Those interested can head to the libraries and sign up from 10am.

The Germiston library is located at the Germiston Civic Centre, Corner Queen and Cross Street, while the Katlehong library is at the Katlehong Civic Centre, 1 Masakhane Street.
