Liquid and air cooling combine in Cooler Master’s strange new CPU cooler

Cooler Master seems to want to end the debate about whether liquid is really better than air at cooling a CPU, by combining the two into one cooler.

The Masterliquid Maker 92 is an all-in-one (AIO) CPU cooler that has a self contained pump for cooling liquid to run through a radiator flanked by two 92mm fans.

All of this is is mounted above the water-block which sits on top of your CPU. The Maker 92 takes the idea of an AIO liquid cooler, shrinks it down and makes it one part rather than two connected by tubing.

The benefit of this is that the Maker 92 is slightly smaller (99.9 x 81.6 x 167.5mm) than something like Cooler Master’s V8 GTS (154 x 149.8 x 166.5mm) air cooler and much more compact than most AIO liquid cooling systems. What’s more is that the Maker 92 can be flipped on its side even after it’s been installed.

“It has dimensions similar to an air cooler, but it packs a punch for its size that air coolers can’t match. And it rotates. It’s like if you somehow jacked up a mid-sized tower CPU cooler’s performance and versatility without changing its size,” Cooler Master product marketing manager, Dorrie Chen said in a statement.

Being able to adjust the form factor of the cooler is a nice touch because it would allow users to position the cooler in a way that is best for the airflow in their case. It also allows users to get air flowing around motherboard, something that traditional AIO liquid coolers don’t necessarily offer outside of the airflow created by radiator fans.

As to its cooling proficiency, on paper it actually looks quite good.

Those 92mm fans are able to create 6.4 mmH2O of air pressure and move air along at 49.7 cubic feet per minute. This should keep the radiator sandwiched between the two fans relatively cool.

Don’t get excited, yet

As weird and unique as this cooler is don’t get your heart set on a Maker 92 just yet.

For instance if you have an AMD system you’re not going to be able to use this cooler. The Maker 92 is only compatible with Intel LGA 2011-v3/2011/1151/1150/1155/1156 sockets.

Secondly if you want one you’re going to have try your luck with the “very limited supply” available for pre-orders from 30th August.

Look, its an interesting idea from Cooler Master and the idea of a simple to install liquid cooling solution definitely appeals to me.

What do you think though? Will the Maker 92 set a trend that others follow or is this just another innovation we’ll eventually file under “Nice try”?
