Viewership stats show local content still thriving on SA TV

South Africans were mostly glued to local TV programmes in July, according to The Broadcast Research Council of South Africa (BRC).

BRC released viewership stats for the top 30 most watch programmes in July on SABC 1, 2 and 3 as well as DStv.

The stats show that local programming dominated on SABC 1 and 2, even more so on DStv, where it occupied 22 out of 30 spots.

SABC 3 on the other hand saw a mash up of local and international shows making up the top 30.

While none of these stats are surprising, as they’ve always looked more or less like this, what’s interesting to note is that July is the month that major changes to SABC TV were announced by COO, Hlaudi Motsoeneng, whose vision is to see more local content being broadcast – particularly on SABC 3.

A host of new local shows were introduced and international ones like Days of Our Lives were axed, much to the disapproval of industry experts, advertisers and viewers (Days of Our Lives was recently brought back, at a late night time slot).

Stats from this month will paint a better picture of whether or not the local content shift on SABC TV was indeed a wise decision, especially since a few other local shows were also introduced this month.

Knowing Motsoeneng and his consistent advocacy for local programming and the positive amounts of revenue it can bring in, such stats would be very useful in backing his arguments against detractors.
