Experience Le Mans in virtual reality thanks to Ford’s new VR app

Last week Ford launched a virtual reality (VR) app called FordVR that focuses on telling stories about the famous car brand.

The first instalment added to the app is the company’s experience in the recent Le Mans 24 hour race.

For those out of the loop, Ford attended Le Mans 50 years ago and won it with their supercar, the Ford GT. With that very same car being reborn as a 2017 model, the company returned to the track to see if they could beat the rest of the field as they did half a century ago. Most notably, if they could once again defeat Ferrari.

Now you’d probably expect us to tell you to download the app on iOS or Android right now so you can see the race in action and find out who won, but there’s a problem with that: it’s not available in South Africa. If you go to the links above you’ll be unable to download them to any device registered in South Africa.

Luckily, we have a 360 degree video you can video below which makes up for it, and we’ll get back to the app after that:

We were able to actually download and get into the app thanks to an iPhone registered to the USA and we were left very disappointed. The app is basically a container for the video above and, after downloading the app, you’ll need to do another, 500 MB download of the video.

You’re much better off simply streaming that video above and avoiding the app and any downloads all together.

The only good thing to come from the download is being told what the next video will be thanks to a “Coming Soon” section. The next 360 / VR video from Ford will be a gymkhana from the famous Ken Block.

While the app and its availability was a disappointment, it is still nice to see. The last time we wrote about Ford was more than a year ago when they started selling 3D printable files, scaled down versions of their cars. It seems that in spite of being one of the oldest car companies in existence, Ford is still keeping up with the times.
