WhatsApp wants to see how it can get users and business interacting

Did you know WhatsApp hasn’t updated its terms of service and privacy policy in four years? Of course you didn’t because who reads that stuff anyway right?

That having been said the updates to its policy released today are worthy of a look because there is mention of something that will no doubt stoke the ire of WhatsApp users, advertising.

Now before you rush off to get your pitchforks its important to note that WhatsApp is only planning to test ways that businesses and users can interact with each other and won’t (for now) be opting for gaudy banner adverts in your chat window.

“We want to explore ways for you to communicate with businesses that matter to you too, while still giving you an experience without third-party banner ads and spam,” reads the WhatsApp blog post.

The possible use cases for this include getting notified that your bank account has been compromised, or that a flight has been delayed. Of course, the word “marketing” comes up but for now it seems along the lines that many online platforms are taking.

“Messages you may receive containing marketing could include an offer for something that might interest you. We do not want you to have a spammy experience; as with all of your messages, you can manage these communications, and we will honor the choices you make,” said WhatsApp.

The service goes on to assure users that their information is still safe and that nothing you share with WhatsApp will be shared with Facebook or any third party for that matter unless it is legally obliged to do so.
