You can now buy domain names with SnapScan

Contactless and cashless payments might still have a long way to go in South Africa, but SnapScan has been making good progress in the country on that front in the last few months.

The technology allows people to pay for goods and services without having to open their wallet, and Domains.co.za is the latest company to accept the payment scheme.

This is a rather significant step for SnapScan, as Domains.co.za is the first South African Internet Service Provider (ISP) and hosting provider to enable SnapScan as a payment method.

“Financial security is the number one concern in online purchasing. Clients can now securely purchase domain names and hosting services with no bank account details or credit card information ever being exchanged,” explained Wayne Diamond, Managing Director of Domains.co.za.

Over 25 000 businesses in South Africa already make use of SnapScan’s functionality. It currently works on iOS and Android, and after the app has been downloaded, linked card details are securely encrypted on the device and no merchant has access to these details.

“To pay using SnapScan, open the SnapScan app, tap on “Scan” and scan the SnapCode (also called a QR code) displayed at the shop or online. This identifies the merchant and prompts you to enter the amount you wish to pay. Enter your PIN to secure and complete the transaction. The merchant receives a notification confirming the payment from SnapScan,” Domains.co.za explained.

With Domains.co.za on board, it’s likely just a matter of time before other ISPs buy into the concept as well.
