Hlaudi honoured for “90% local music” with award named after him

SABC COO, Hlaudi Motsoeneng has been honoured with a music award category being named after him.

The South African Traditional Music Awards announced yesterday it would be naming a category after Motsoeneng in recognition of his promotion of traditional music through the 90% local music quota introduced to all SABC radio stations in May.

“As from today we as SATMA, we took a decision to honour uBab’ Motsoeneng with one of the categories [sic], said Dumisani Goba, founder of the SATMAs.

“Not during this period of the SABC, but lifetime,” he added, alluding to the fact that the category name will remain even after Motsoeneng no longer holds the title of SABC COO.

Other categories at the SATMAs will also be changed to the names of notable South Africans who’ve had an impact on cultural music and societal changes as a whole.

“I’m happy, but what is more important for me, I just came with this idea of 90% not knowing that people of South Africa, they’ll be so excited, especially the [music] artists themselves. I’m glad and it’s the SABC team, it’s not about individual, I’m just leading the team [sic],” Motsoeneng said at the awards announcement event held in Durban.

The SATMA awards will be hosted on 1st October in Richards Bay, KwaZulu-Natal.
