#ElectionResults: Map shows poor representation of women across secured wards

With all but a handful of municipalities concluding their results for the 2016 Municipal Elections, a data map which looks at the representation of women councillors shows very low numbers vs men across the country.

Code for South Africa (Code4SA) has collated data from the IEC with concluded results so far, to create an interactive map which looks at representation among the top three contesting parties.

According to the IEC, over 250 municipalities were contested in the elections and according to the map, women have won in only about 80, so far.

The municipalities with the highest representation of women is Govan Mbeki Local Municipality and Emalahleni in Mpumalanga as well as Drakenstein in the Western Cape.

Those with the least number of women are spread across the country and have none or only two or three women councillors.

Winners in key metros, Joburg, Cape Town, Nelson Mandela Bay, Tshwane and eThekwini are yet to be announced.
