Samsung’s music playing wearables land in SA this month and cost less than R4 000

Samsung has announced that two of its latest wearables, the Gear Fit2 and Gear IconX will be available locally in August.

The two wearables are, of course meant to be used as fitness trackers but are incredibly different. The Fit2 is a traditional wearable that you you put on your wrist while the IconX is a wireless earbud.

Samsung Gear IconX

The wireless ear buds are tiny, weighing just 6.3g each and measuring 18.9x26mm. Inside, the ear piece comes equipped with 4GB of storage for your music, Bluetooth 4.1, and a 47mAh battery. A word of warning about the internal storage, users can only load up to 1 000 songs on the IconX, no matter how big or small the files might be.

The Icon X isn’t just made for listening to music on the run, it also boasts an accelerometer, capacitive touch and heart rate monitor so you can keep track of your run. All the data gleaned from the Icon X including: speed, distance, heart rate, and calories burned, can be synced with the S Health app.

Samsung has said that the wearable will feed users information about their workout through the ear piece.

When the battery runs out you can use the included charging case with its 315mAh battery to juice the ear buds back up again.

These nifty earbuds come in three colours (blue, black and white) and will be available from Dion Wired, Incredible Connection, Makro and Samsung stores later in August at a starting price of R3 499.

Samsung Gear Fit2

The Gear Fit2 comes equipped with the usual features you would expect to find in a fitness tracker. Underneath the curved 1.5inch display there is a gyro, heart rate monitor, GPS, barometer, Bluetooth 4.2 as well as an accelerometer.

Once again, all of the data captured by the Fit2 can be shared with the S Health app or other fitness apps.

For those that aren’t a fan of earbuds like the IconX, the Fit2 is also a standalone music player fitted with 4GB of storage.

Perhaps the greatest feature in the Fit2 is its ability to “know” which exercise you’re busy with. The Auto Activity Tracking feature will monitor your heartbeat, the gyro, accelerometer and gyro to determine whether a user is running, walking, cycling, rowing or spinning, and track the activity accordingly.

It’s even IP68 certified (up to 30 minutes in 1.5m of water) so you could probably shower with the wearable without destroying it.

The Fit2 is available in three colours (black, pink and blue) and you can get one today from Dion Wired, Incredible Connection, Makro and Samsung stores starting at R3 999.
