SABC’s high advertising costs to balloon even further

The SABC, which may or may not be in financial trouble, depending on whether you believe news reports or the Minister of Communiacations, plans on spending tons more money on advertising in the current financial year.

This is according to a written parliamentary reply sent to the DA from the Communications ministry.

The party’s Johanna Edwards had asked how much the department and the entities which report to it (including the SABC) spend on advertising in the 2015/16 financial and how much they plan on spend in the 2016/17 financial year.

According to the reply, the SABC spent R35.4 million in the previous year and this amount will increase by R7 million to R42 million in the current year.

The department itself spent R3.2 million in the 2015/16 financial year.

“Three years ago, the SABC spent less than R10 million on advertising; it is unclear why this amount would have quadrupled,” DA national spokesperson, Phumzile van Damme said.

“The SABC’s increase in advertising is in express defiance of Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan’s instruction to government departments and entities to cut unnecessary spending. While it is indeed necessary for the SABC to advertise outside its own platforms from time to time, this should be kept to a minimum,” she added.

Ms van Damme added that the party is eagerly awaiting the public broadcaster’s annual report in October, as it believes it will be revealed that significant losses will be made at the SABC.

“The DA will submit further parliamentary questions to ascertain in which media platforms and for what purposes these adverts were placed,” she said.
