Sony Bravia TVs from 2012 won’t support YouTube after September

Sony in the UK has said that 50 models of its smart Bravia TVs that were launched in 2012 will no longer support the YouTube app.

The new “YouTube on TV” app is reportedly causing TVs to freeze and display black screens. Some users have also reported an an error message when they’ve tried to catch up with their favourite YouTube creators.

“The symptoms being experienced are not a failure of the TV,” said Sony, “but are as a result of specification changes made by YouTube that exceed the capability of the TV’s hardware.”

So actually Sony, it appears as if your TV is actually failing to keep up with something rather simple.

Google announced back in August that it would ramp up its use of HTTPS protocols for YouTube and Calendar. This is, primarily, more secure than HTTP protocols but also cleans up any errors that might occur during the stream. It is also meant to decrease latency so you might not as much buffering in the future.

The end result of this is Bravia TVs being incapable of handling this secure protocol and Sony planning to remove the YouTube icon from TVs on 30th September 2016.

It’s a bit of a kick in the pants for anybody that enjoys watching YouTube videos on their TV and while it might not sound like that big of a deal, who knows what else will be culled from older smart TVs in the future?

Sony has, rather kindly compiled a list of the 50 Bravia models that will be affected by this removal of YouTube. To check if your TV is one, turn it around and look for the model number (usually preceded by a M/N) and check to see if you’ll still be able to watch YouTube on your TV come October.
