First a song, now Hlaudi to host multi-million rand “Thank You SABC” concert

The “Thank You SABC” song pales in comparison to what’s coming this weekend to thank COO, Hlaudi Motsoeneng for his decision to have 90% local music played on the public broadcaster’s radio stations.

This Saturday, the iconic Orlando Stadium will play host to the 12-hour long “Thank You SABC” concert, with the aim of filling up the 40 000-seater venue, organisers announced.

SABC Concert

Tickets for the “Thank You SABC” Concert are R100 a head, but if you’re a TV licence payer, you could be the recipient of one of 1 000 free tickets being given away by the SABC. You’ll have to produce your valid licence at the door in order to gain entry.

But wait, there’s more: attendees can expect to see a line-up of South African artists who were part of the song, include poet Mzwakhe Mbuli, as well popular favourites, DJ Black Coffee and Mafikizolo.

“The SABC has welcomed the ‘Thank You SABC Concert’ and all the artists that will perform have embraced and are proud of the public broadcaster’s initiative to prioritise and support local music,” the public broadcaster said in a statement.

And that’s not all folks; free gifts and T-shirts will be given away at the concert as well.

How much is this all going to cost?

We contacted Stadium Management South Africa, which handles management and bookings for four stadiums in Joburg, including Orlando, to get a quote of how much it costs to book the venue for an event. However, were told to submit a formal quote to get an accurate response, which would’ve taken some time to do.

But, judging by the fact that hip hop star, Cassper Nyovest, will be host his #FillUpOrlandoStadium concert next month at a cost of R25 million, it may not be far off from the bill the SABC will also have to pay for the event.

Of course, the costs will be covered using the public broadcaster’s official coffers, which is probably not a good idea since it’s already reportedly cash-strapped and should rather be looking at saving money instead of splurging on unnecessary shindigs.

Oh, well, who cares? Certainly not Hlaudi Motsoeneng. Cheers to the SABC concert, folks!
