These are Tshwane’s water restrictions

The City of Tshwane today was the last major Gauteng metro to announce the implementation of water restrictions as instructed by the Department of Water and Sanitation.

The capital city, along with all other Gauteng municipalities, has been instructed to reduce its urban water consumption by 15%.

The City of Joburg announced its water restrictions and tariff increases last week, while Ekurhuleni revealed its own yesterday.

Tshwane receives receive 72 % of its bulk water from Rand Water, but also sources 28% water from its own treatment plants and boreholes.

As of today, residents are not allowed to do the following:

  • Water/irrigate gardens with a hosepipe or sprinkler from 6am to 6pm;
  • Wash vehicles with hosepipes
  • Fill swimming pools

“We urge all our consumers to join us in making efforts to reduce the water consumption. Should the consumers not adhere to the restrictions as imposed by the National Department of Water and Sanitation as well as Rand Water, then the situation will worsen and consumers will be without water for longer periods,” the city said.

While, unlike Joburg, Tshwane hasn’t increased water tariffs, it said it will be forced to do so if the situation does not improve. Increased policing and water shedding will also be introduced.

Consumers are also encouraged to use water saving tips that are distributed through flyers and through the City’s various communication platforms.
