Local online retailer, Takealot has started advertising a curious smartphone, the OnePlus 3.

For those that keep up with the smartphone brands which are represented in South Africa you will know that OnePlus is not represented at all.

Despite this, Takealot has started advertising the Chinese manufacturers wares and scheduled a release for Tuesday 27th September. Our fear was that because there is no OnePlus representation locally, the warranty that is included with the phone would not apply.

We spoke to a Takealot returns agent who informed us that the OnePlus 3 would carry a 6 month warranty backed by Takealot. Thereafter the OnePlus limited 12 month warranty would take effect for the next six months.

We’re waiting for official word from Takealot to confirm that the OnePlus-backed warranty will be valid but at least there is a six month warranty.

But what about the phone?

Now that we’ve got that out of the way, what about the phone?

The 5.5inch Android handset houses a Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 chipset which has a support for both 802.11ac WiFi and LTE mobile networks.

The quad-core CPU has two cores running at 2.2GHz while the other two run slightly slower at 1.6GHz. This seems ample for CPU intensive tasks as well tasks that don’t need quite as much grunt such as responding to a text message.

The CPU is paired with 6GB of RAM which is, well, a lot. Many manufacturers opt for half that amount of RAM with great results, so double that has our minds whirring with possibilities.

The “bigger is better” trend continues through to the 64GB of internal storage though sadly there isn’t a slot for a microSD card.

The battery is the real star of the show here though. The 3 000mAh Li-Ion battery is not big in itself but according to OnePlus, a 30 minute charge will top the battery up to 60%, enough for a day of use according to the firm.

Sadly, the price is just as big as everything else. The OnePlus 3 in Graphite and Rose Gold is currently available for pre-order on Takealot for R10 999.

If you are in the market for the OnePlus 3 Takealot recommends placing your order and completing payment before – not on – 26th September to insure delivery on 28th September.
