Get your phone engraved at Huawei’s new customer service centres

Huawei South Africa has opened two customer service centres in Johannesburg and Cape Town this week that offer customers a variety of services, including free smartphone engraving.

The service centres located in Melrose Arch (Johannesburg) and Canal Walk (Cape Town) have been designed to include the firm’s technology, service and repair services into one location. Oh, and Huawei says that the WiFi is free.

“Huawei intends to create an interactive space where every customer is important and will be treated as such by our in-store tech heroes. We understand that consumers seek holistic experiences to fit their lifestyles and our service stores succeed in providing this,” general manager of Huawei Consumer Business Group SA, Charlene Munilall, said in a prepared statement.

Customers will also be able to attend “training sessions”. We’ve asked Huawei to clarify what exactly it means here because we aren’t entirely sure what a customer would need training in.

Is the training related to fixing your own phone? Is it the correct way to charge your phone? Is it training on how to turn your phone into a SCUD missile launcher? If Huawei responds we’ll update you here.

UPDATE 09/16: Huawei has told us that the training customers can receive will cover topics such as how to get the most of features such as the camera as well as show them the key aspects of the handsets. No SCUD missile launching then.

On-site repair for some handsets.

There’s also good news for you if you own a Huawei P8, P9, P9 Plus, Mate S and Mate 89 smartphone. Huawei Select is a service which will offer on-site repair for the aforementioned Huawei handsets.

If you can’t make it into a store, Huawei will arrange for your handset to be collected, and then delivered back to you once it is repaired. Sadly this offer is only available to Mate 8, P9 and P9 Plus owners.

We quite like the idea of being able to take a handset into a brand’s brick-and-mortar store rather than ship it off to a workshop where we have no means of getting updates on the repair process.

Nice move Huawei.
