Protect the infamously flimsy Apple Lightning cables with this 3D printed brace

Apple’s name-brand Lightning cables are known to break where the connector meets the cable, an especially irritating problem for those who fork out the money for the needlessly pricey pieces of copper and plastic.

But the internet is here to save the day again in the form of a kind of brace you can 3D print and sip onto your cables.

The design is free to download off of Thingiverse and is intended for the common male Lightning to male USB cables.

Looking at the local iStore site and the regular version of this cable is a whopping R400. That price really doesn’t speak to the durability of the product but, hey, it’s Apple.

We understand that not everyone has access to a 3D printer or the patience to print something on it so, below, you’ll find a collection of alternate methods to achieve the same result.

  • Sliding a spring from a pen over the connection point is an easy fix / preventative measure.
  • Got some of those once-popular loom bands lying around? Wind them around the cable.
  • Good old electrical tape.
  • Switch to Android.
  • Heat and shrink rap is the easiest way to add some strength without adding bulk.
  • Turn it into a coil.
