Create a clever Halloween costume, win a 3D printer

Sharing site for 3D printble designs Thingiverse is running a contest for Halloween: design a costume for the day and you could win a 3D printer or filament.

The contest is called the “Costume Challenge”:

Halloween is coming and we’re challenging you to design something awesome to wear to a costume party. Entries can be full costumes, individual components like masks, or even utilitarian pieces that work behind the scenes. Entries should be original creations and truly wearable. Prizes include a MakerBot Replicator 3D Printer and spools of filament.

First place will be walking away with a  MakerBot Replicator and five runner-ups will each win five spools of makerBot ABS or PLA.

While the 3D printer is an overall prize, the runner-up prizes are for each of these categories:

  • Best El Wire/El Panel Design
  • Best Documented Design
  • Best Educational Design
  • Best Accessible Design
  • Best Utilitarian Design

The contest is running from now until October 26th 2016 at 11:59 PM EDT (05:59 AM the next day local time). At the time of writing only 33 entries were in. Given the size of Thingiverse’s userbase, we expect that to shoot up exponentially as the closing date draws near.

Other rules include the fact that what you upload needs to contain at least one STL file and some documentation, and you’ll actually have to create one physical print to display the design. You’ll also need to use the hashtag #CostumeChallenge to the judges can find.

There’s one rule that throws a spanner in the works though: the entries cannot “incorporate others’ intellectual property without permission”. This would mean that an already entered design like this Iron Man arc reactor would not be allowed unless the designer managed to get permission from Marvel themselves. Good luck with that.
