Modder recreates No Man’s Sky in DOOM 2

At this point No Man’s Sky is generally looked down upon as a disappointment at best and a shameless cash grab at worst, but that doesn’t mean it wasn’t a great idea that boasted massive potential. Perhaps what it needed was a developer who could realise this.

Enter Robert Prest who has created “No Guy’s Sky“, a mod for DOOM 2 that recreates  No Man’s Sky in a game from 1994.

This mod features almost everything from the game it takes inspiration from: the ability to jump into a spaceship to fly to procedurally generated planets and then jump out and mine anything and everything.

There are even random animals created from enemy sprites from DOOM 2 as well as some other surprises we’ll let you see for yourself in the video below:

Our favourite part of this mod isn’t the ingenuity or the skill it took to pull it off, but the fact that Prest created this without ever playing No Man’s Sky. Everything you see here came out of what he saw in the trailer for the game.

While this mod isn’t available yet, we thought we should mention that it is partially based on another project of Prest called DoomZ, which is the popular survival game DayZ inside of DOOM 2. That can be downloaded right now and it even has its own site.

But if you want more No Guy’s Sky check out this gallery of screenshots, or our diary of frustrations with the base game.
