Samsung’s 960 PRO M.2 SSD hits read-speed of 3.5GB/s

If you’ve been toying with the idea of upgrading your solid state drive (SSD), you might want to hold out just a bit longer because Samsung has announced its 960 PRO and 960 EVO M.2 SSDs.

The storage drives once again use Samsung’s 3D V-NAND technology, which allows the manufacturer to stack 48-layer NAND onto the drive. This means Samsung is now able to offer you a 2TB M.2 SSD. We’ll wait while you pick your jaw up off of the floor.

The 960 EVO has sequential read and write speeds of up to 3.2GB/s and 1.9GB/s respectively. The beefier 960 PRO hits sequential read and write speeds of 3.5GB/s and 2.1GB/s.

This speed difference comes down to the type of NAND Samsung is using. The 960 PRO uses the more expensive but ultimately more stable and faster MLC V-NAND while the 960 EVO relies on cheaper, slower TLC V-NAND.

Storage capacities in the 960 EVO range include 250GB, 500GB and 1TB while the 960 PRO offers capacities of 512GB, 1TB and 2TB.

Both of the 960 drives will also include Dynamic Thermal Guard technology that, according to the firm, will lessen the degree of thermal throttling. This technology, according to Anandtech, is an adhesive label that uses a layer of copper to improve thermal performance by 30%.

Now for the kicker: the cost. The 960 PRO starts at $329 (~R4 600) for the 512GB iteration while the 960 EVO starts at $129 (~R1 800) for the 250GB drive. While local pricing is yet to be confirmed a 950 PRO 512 M.2 SSD retails for R5 999 locally, so expect prices for these new drives to be higher.

We don’t have an exact release date for these drives yet other than Samsung saying the drives would be available from October. We’ve asked Samsung to give us a better idea of when exactly we can expect the drives and once we know, we’ll update this story.
