Retailer accidentally reveals Intel’s Kaby Lake processors for desktops

An Estonian retailer may have spilled the beans on Intel’s desktop processors in the new Kaby Lake family, by posted pricing and details of the new processors online.

This leak came ahead of Intel releasing any specifications.

Faunder, the site in question, has since removed the listing but not before Wccftech was able to grab a screenshot of the offer.

The first of the two chips revealed was an Intel Core i7-7700K which has four cores and eight threads running at a base clock of 4.2GHz (boost clock 4.5GHz). The 7700K will apparently have an 8MB L3 cache and a TDP of 95W.

The second processor that was leaked was an Intel Core i5-7600K. This appears to be another quad-core with eight threads but this chip doesn’t appear to have hyper-threading. The processor runs at a base clock of 3.8GHz and according to Wccftech goes over 4GHz when boosted.

The Core i5-7600K has the same TDP as the i7-7700K.

We do want to augment this with a disclaimer: none of these specs have been confirmed by Intel but it’s nice to know what the PC hardware enthusiasts among us can expect.

Until this leak, all we’d seen from the Kaby Lake family was its mobile processors. The full-fat desktop processors are only scheduled for release later this year or early 2017, the same period AMD is set to release Zen.

Upgrades for everybody

Insofar as we can tell these new Kaby Lake processors will run on the Intel LGA1151 platform. In addition to this a 200-series chipset will launch alongside the Kaby Lake desktop processors. This chipset will be able to house up to ten USB 3.0 ports, 24 PCIe 3.0 lanes and as many as six SATA 3.0 ports.

The good news is that the 200-series chipset will be backwards compatible with the current slew of Skylake processors, good news for anybody looking to upgrade their CPU in the next year but don’t want to have to cough up for a new motherboard.

Faunder had listed the i7’s pre-order price of €360.35 (~R5 500) which is in-line with the price of a Skylake Core i7-6700K which retails for R6 000 locally.
