DA: Hlaudi’s new appointment smacks of irregularity

The DA has said it will seek legal advice on the appointment of Hlaudi Motsoeneng as the SABC’s new Group Executive of Corporate Affairs, which it said “smacks of irregularity”.

Yesterday, SABC acting CEO, James Aguma, announced Motsoeneng’s new position after more than a week of uncertainty over what position he would occupy after the Supreme Court of Appeal dismissed his second bid to overturn the ruling that his appointment as COO was unlawful.

“The speed and apparent secrecy with which the “process” was carried out raises questions about the credibility of the appointment hot off the heels of the Supreme Court of Appeal’s (SCA) dismissal of leave to appeal,” James Selfe, DA chairperson of the Federal Council said in a statement.

“Although it is not entirely clear; it would appear that Bessie Tungwana was quickly smuggled out of her position as the Group Executive of Corporate Affairs and relocated to the office of the CEO,  which would likely be a highly irregular circumnavigation of due appointment procedures,” Selfe added.

The DA said will be consulting its lawyers to find a way forward and have the following questions answered:

  • Who had the position of Group Executive: Corporate Affairs before?
  • Was the position even vacant?
  • Was the position advertised?
  • Were proper appointment procedures duly observed?
