HP apologises for bricking your third party ink cartridges

After nearly a month of silence on the matter, HP has issued an apology to customers who had third-party ink cartridges bricked by a firmware update.

The apology from HP chief operating officer, Jon Flaxman comes days after the Electronic Frontier Foundation submitted a list of demands to HP.

“As a new company, we are committed to transparency in all of our communications and when we fall short, we call ourselves out,” Flaxman wrote in an HP blog.

At this point we’d like to remind you that HP sent the firmware update out in March, activated the function that bricked cartridges at the beginning of September, and has issued an apology this week, after the EFF called the firm out.

Leaving that nitpick aside, Flaxman goes on to explain that HP should have done a better job of informing customers about the procedure for authenticating products.

In light of this, HP will be issuing an optional firmware update in the next two weeks that will remove the dynamic security feature which has bricked some third party ink cartridges.

If you think that’s a nice kind hearted move think again. Flaxman goes on to say that the firm will continue to use security features protect customers and “our IP”. This may in the future include ways for the firm to prevent third-party supplies from working.

So in two weeks you’ll be able to use your third party cartridges again. Just don’t expect to be able to use them for very much longer after that.
