To open or not to open: Wits goes to the polls

Instead of taking an independent decision to close campuses indefinitely, like the University of Cape Town and other institutions did, Wits is letting its students decide whether or not classes should resume.

The students #WitsPoll was launched at 7am this morning, which saw students receiving an SMS with the question “Should Wits open on Monday, 3rd October, subject to appropriate security protocols being in place? Reply with yes or no Poll closes 4pm. Reply is free”.

“It is a poll to gauge the views of students and staff that will enable the University to make better decisions concerning the resumption of academic activities,” Wits said.

Staff can vote in the poll via a link to a website that has been circulated to them by email with instructions of how to log in and respond.

Only one vote per person is allowed, the poll is anonymous and will be audited by top South African auditing company, SizweNtsalubaGobodo.

Last night, Wits Student Representative Council members tried to obtain an interdict in the High Court to stop the Wits Poll from taking place, but the court ruled in favour of the university.

#FeesMustFall protestors have however vowed to continue demonstrating, despite the results of the poll.
