Hlaudi highest paid person at SABC & earns more than Zuma

Hlaudi Motsoeneng, is the highest paid person at the SABC this year, earning close to R4.2 million rand in the 2015/16, financial year.

His salary is almost double that of President Jacob Zuma.

This is according to the SABC’s annual report, which contains figures on how much executives at the public broadcaster earned last year and this year.

In 2015 while he was COO, Motsoeneng was the second highest earner in the company, receiving R3.7 million, while long-time SABC employee, Anton Heunis, who acted at CEO for three months before moving onto another executive position, earned R4.1 million.

This year saw Motsoeneng’s salary increase by almost half a million, to exactly R4.197 million. President Jacob Zuma earns R2.8 million a year. Current acting CEO, James Aguma, earns R3.6 million.

According to the report, Motsoeneng’s earnings are broken down as follows:

  • Basic Salary: R2 555 000
  • 13th cheque (bonus) and other commissions: R213 000
  • Expenses and other allowances: R945 000
  • Contributions to pension fund, medical aid: R485 000

This all while the Public Protector ruled in a 2014 report that his appointment as COO was unlawful and was backed by a judgement by the Western Cape High Court.

Added to that, is the fact that the SABC recorded a loss of R411 million in revenue this year.

The DA has said it will request that an investigation into why and how Motsoeneng’s salary was increased, be included in the anticipated parliamentary inquiry into the SABC next week.

“This lends credence to the suspicion that Motsoeneng served as de facto CEO of the public broadcaster,” the party said.
